For our trip to Zimbabwe, we stayed at the Ilala Lodge and the Palm River Hotel, two sister properties situated on the banks of the mighty Victoria Falls. We were so excited to be back in this region, which was hands down one of the highlights of last year.
The Ilala Lodge hotel was love at first sight. A modern resort with the right balance between modern comfort and old world charm. This is a family run boutique hotel with a touch of class thrown in to the mix.
Location Location Location!
When it comes to seeing the popular attractions, we prefer staying as close as possible to make the most of our visits. One of the best reasons to stay here is that the lodge is at a walking distance from the Victoria Falls and the city center. So easy to book activities or just take a stroll for sunset or sunrise.
Service
This place does have a boutique hotel vibe, but the service standards are that of a star resort. From the ever smiling staff who are always on hand for everything you need. The little personal touches are what made us feel like royalty.
Lounge and Common Areas
The common areas are done up with exquisite taste and elegance. Fine dark wood, tall ceilings, ornate chandeliers and fine linen. The entire setting has place has a colonial feel to it.
Rooms
There are 73 rooms and suites to choose from at this property.
Standard & Deluxe Rooms
The rooms are spacious, with every modern equipment and a fully stocked mini-bar. The highlight of the room is that everyone gets a slice of the pie - right from the balcony, you can see the world's most spectacular natural wonder.
The Deluxe room we stayed in was tastefully furnished with white linens, tapestry, dark wooden furniture and a ridiculously comfortable bed. The bathroom was just as big with an open shower with sustainable products. The coffee machine and the fully stocked mini-bar and fresh baked treats come included in the room rate and these will be much appreciated after a warm day out exploring the falls.
Suites - standard, executive, strathearn
For larger families, you also have great options to choose from that come with a larger balcony, separate living areas, jacuzzi and even a kitchenette.
These rooms are just as well lit and share the dark wood of the deluxe rooms. These bigger suites have both a tub and a free-standing shower.
Dining and Bar Area
The dining area was one of my favorite rooms. Done up with impeccable finesse, it offers indoor and outdoor seating with the best views of the Victoria Falls any time of day.
You can enjoy continental as well local options from their al carte menu any time of day.. or hop over to the bar for a sundowner by the pool.
Breakfast
We both thoroughly enjoyed the breakfast spread with fresh vegan/vegetarian options and a grand buffet. The service was quick as well, very impressive.
Cannot image a better way to start the day.. get there early if you would like to catch a beautiful spot for the view of the fall. I loved the vegan options and how beautifully it was presented.
Things to do
When in Victoria Falls, there are things you don't want to miss. There are no dearth of activities either - from the strenuous to the relaxed. Choose from
- sunset river cruise
- devil's pool
- walking inside the Victoria Falls park
- river rafting
- ziplining
- helicopter ride
The concierge team are amazing, they will give your competitive rates and wonderful recommendations for any activities you choose.
Final Thoughts
This lodge is yet another fine example of getting the basics right without going over the top, amazing value for money given it's proximity to the falls. From delicious food, to the convenient location to the fantastic staff, this beautiful hotel is a fantastic place to base yourself in for an adventure. There are so many great things to do on and off this property. It is the ideal base for you entry into the magical world of the iconic Victoria Falls.
