La Nouvelle Liberté
Standing tall in the Deido district, La Nouvelle Liberté is an iconic sculpture that has become a symbol of Douala's artistic spirit. Created by Joseph-Francis Sumégné, this 12-meter-high statue is made entirely from recycled materials, reflecting the city's commitment to sustainability and creativity.

For art enthusiasts, Doual'Art is an essential stop. This contemporary art center, founded in 1991, is dedicated to promoting urban art and culture. The center regularly hosts exhibitions, workshops, and cultural events that showcase both local and international artists. Doual'Art plays a crucial role in shaping the city's cultural landscape and offers visitors a unique insight into Cameroon's vibrant art scene.

To delve into Cameroon's maritime history, visit the Musée Maritime de Douala. This museum, housed in a colonial-era building, offers a fascinating glimpse into the country's naval past. Exhibits include ancient maps, nautical instruments, and model ships, providing a comprehensive overview of Cameroon's relationship with the sea. The museum also highlights the importance of the Wouri River and the Port of Douala in shaping the city's development.

To appreciate Douala's colonial past, take a stroll through the Bonanjo district. This area is home to several well-preserved colonial-era buildings, including the Pagoda House and the former Palace of the German Governor. Wouri River
No visit to Douala is complete without experiencing the Wouri River. Take a boat tour to appreciate the city's skyline from a different perspective and observe the bustling port activities. The river plays a crucial role in Douala's economy and offers a refreshing escape from the urban landscape.
Ekom Nkam Waterfalls
Nestled in the heart of the forest, the mesmerizing waterfalls plunge from a towering height of about 80 metere, delivering a spellbinding spectacle that seems straight out of a storybook.
The name Ekom Nkam comes from 2 words: Ekom which is the name of the village where the falls are located, and Nkam which is the name of the river from which the falls originate. The tallest waterfalls in the country, the falls are characterized by two falls: a “male” fed continuously whatever the season, and a “female” fed only in the rainy season, which is why JUNE is the best time to visit this waterfall.
It is one of the largest waterfalls in Cameroon, and it’s absolutely stunning. Imagine a powerful torrent of water cascading down from a height of 80 meters (262 feet), surrounded by dense, emerald-green forest. The water crashes into the rocky basin below, creating a misty spray that glistens in the sunlight. It’s wild, untamed, and completely mesmerizing. This is nature at its most raw and beautiful.
We spent hours just walking around, taking in the views from different angles. There are several lookout points, each offering a unique perspective of the falls. From one spot, you can see the entire drop of the waterfall, and from another, you can get up close to feel the cool mist on your face. If you’re lucky, you might even catch a rainbow forming in the spray, a picture, perfect moment. Ekom Nkam is not just about the waterfall either. The area around the falls is lush and teeming with life. I saw birds swooping overhead, colorful butterflies fluttering by, and even a few curious monkeys peeking out from the treetops. If you love nature, this place will be paradise for you. You can wander through the forest, breathe in the fresh air, and just feel a sense of peace and tranquility wash over you. If you’re up for a little adventure, you can also take a short hike down to the base of the falls. It’s a bit slippery, so make sure you have the right footwear. But once you’re down there, you’ll get an entirely different perspective of the falls—one that makes you feel tiny and insignificant in the best possible way. Standing at the bottom, with the water crashing down in front of me, I felt like I was witnessing the sheer power and majesty of nature.
One thing that makes Ekom Nkam particularly special is its appearance in the classic movie Greystoke: The Legend of Tarzan. If you’re a movie buff like me, you’ll be excited to know that scenes from the film were shot right here. As I stood by the falls, I couldn’t help but imagine Tarzan swinging through the trees, with the roar of the waterfall echoing in the background. It added a touch of cinematic magic to an already incredible place.
