Updated: Jan 10

Have you ever dreamed of stepping into the pages of One Thousand and One Nights? Morocco's Imperial cities offer just that - a magical journey through time, where ancient traditions blend seamlessly with modern life. But with so much to see and limited PTO days, how can you possibly experience it all?

Tourist and travel bloggers enjoying Moroccan landscapes

Known for its Atlantic beaches, maze-like souks, the Sahara desert, mountain villages and Berber communities, this country has a lot to offer visitors. In addition to shopping, eating tagines, sipping endless mint tea, or just relaxing on the beach, you can explore an ancient Kasbah.

Hold your breath because we've cracked the code to experiencing Morocco's four imperial cities - Casablanca, Chefchaouen, Fez, Meknes - in just one week. I deliberately skipped Marrakech because shopping, eating and roaming on repeat isn't my style. You get the same experience in Fez without the tourist crowds. From the bustling souks and aromatic spice markets to the intricate mosaics of centuries-old palaces, this itinerary will allow you to experience Moroccan culture in a short span of time.

BEST PLACES TO VISIT IN MOROCCO

When planning your week-long journey through Morocco's Cities, it's crucial to allocate your time wisely to make the most of your experience. Here is a suggested breakdown by city: Casablanca: 1 day

Chefchaouen: 2 days

Fez: 2 days Meknes: 1 day Optional add-on: Marrakech & Sahara desert camping: 3 days

TABLE OF CONTENTS
FLIGHTS + VISA

We flew Qatar Airways via Doha both ways. The easiest connection is often with Royal Air Marroc (they have mixed reviews, but we have flown with them and didn't have any issues).

Visa is easy to do online and available for many citizens around the world, including Indian passport holders and UAE residents.

LANGUAGE

French is widely spoken due to Morocco's colonial history and serves as a second language in business, education, and signage. In tourist-heavy areas, English is becoming more common, and Spanish is spoken in the northern parts due to the proximity to Spain.

BEST TIME TO VISIT

Morocco is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on the type of experience you seek. I highly recommend spring and fall for the most pleasant weather to explore by foot.

CURRENCY

The official currency of Morocco is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD). ATMs are widely available in cities and towns, and international cards are generally accepted. However, small shops, street vendors, and local markets often deal only in cash. Tipping is customary in Morocco!

LOCAL GUIDE

As is always the case in Africa, hiring a local guide in Morocco can elevate your experience by providing deeper insights into the country’s rich history, culture, and hidden gems. Guides can not only show you the best places to visit in Morocco, but also help you navigate bustling souks, complex medinas, and rural trails, making your trip more enriching and stress-free. SOLO TRAVEL + GENERAL SAFETY

Traveling solo as a woman in Morocco requires that you exercise common sense, we felt very safe during our trip, as the culture is very warm and hospitable. However, as with any travel destination, staying informed and prepared is key to ensuring a safe and enjoyable journey.

VEGAN + VEGETARIAN FOOD

Morocco’s culinary scene is a paradise for vegetarians and vegans, with its rich array of plant-based dishes brimming with bold flavors and spices. Must-try dishes: Tagines, Couscous, Harira Soup, Zaalouk

Highlights
CASABLANCA

Casablanca is perhaps one of the most misunderstood cities in Morocco. As the largest city in Morocco, it is the cultural capital and the country’s economic heartbeat. And yet, it is often bypassed by people - is it because the city’s modern appearance does not fit into the “romanticized” vision of Morocco?

That said, there are plenty of beautiful things to do here:

📌 Hassan Mosque: To many travelers, the one and only stop is Hassan II Mosque. Situated right on the shore of the Atlantic Ocean, the mosque is the largest in Morocco and has the second-highest minaret in the world. The splendor of the mosque is mightily impressive. I highly recommend taking the time to watch the sunset from the corniche - best views of the mosque with the Atlantic Ocean.

📌 the United Nations Square, often regarded as the city’s center. Once known as the Square of France, this plaza was designed to showcase the meeting point of old Casablanca (the Old Medina) and the European Ville Nouvelle (the New City). It perfectly embodies the city’s complex history and is a good point to begin exploring Casablanca!

📌 The Medina of Casablanca - Casablanca may be known as an ultra-modern city, but it has a long history. Known as Anfa in ancient times, the Romans allegedly established the city in 15 BC, and it quickly became a modest commercial port under Emperor Augustus. Even if you have visited famous souks in Fez or Marrakesh, I recommend taking an hour or two to explore the Medinas!

📌 The “New City” of Casablanca - there is a lot to love about Ville Nouvelle of Casablanca, the “new city” constructed under the French Protectorate. The colonial government developed the city as the economic engine of French Morocco. A relatively unknown area in the city, it’s a whole vibe exploring these streets and modern street art at dusk!

CHEFCHAOUEN

Imagine walking around and everything is painted blue – like, every single wall, every door, even some of the stairs! It's a whole spectrum of blue, from that soft baby blue to this deep, dreamy indigo. It's like you stepped into a fairytale, seriously.

Wandering through the maze of alleys is the absolute vibe. You're surrounded by the smell of spices, like cinnamon and cumin, and every corner is a postcard waiting to happen. You'll be snapping pics non-stop – trust me.

And don't even get me started on the souvenirs! Even if you're not usually a shopper, you'll find yourself tempted by all the cool trinkets – handmade jewelry, colorful rugs, these amazing printed bags. I went totally photo crazy, no lie. The colors and textures are insane. Like, seriously, Chefchaouen was the absolute highlight of my whole trip to Morocco. You have got to see it for yourself!

After you have explored all the alleys, don't forget to pamper yourself with a relaxing Moroccan Hammam spa!

AKCHOUR WATERFALLS

True to style, our trip just wasn’t about the popular cities. An hour from Chefchaouen, tucked away in the heart of the Rif Mountains, Akchour Waterfalls is a paradise that feels like a well-kept secret. The simple hike up is a short 2-3 hour journey through green valleys, crossing over crystal-clear streams, surrounded by the scent of pine. As you trek, you will find small pools until you reach the bigger one at the end. If you’re looking to escape the tourist trail without venturing too far, Akchour is the spot

FEZ

One of the oldest cities in Morocco, it dates back to the 9th century and has ancient walled district compromised of thousands of colorful winding alleys filled with life!

Nur: This restaurant offers a unique farm-to-table experience with a creative Moroccan-vegetarian twist.

The Ruined Garden: : an oasis of greenery, with options like couscous stuffed with vegetables and their famous orange blossom tea!

MEKNES

Our journey through Morocco wraps up in the historical heart of Meknes, a city where every corner echoes timeless charm. Located just a short drive from Fez, Meknes is another hidden gem that few tourists take the time to discover!

Here are the must-sees:
